INTRODUCTION: Building the World Wide Workflow Grid
A world wide revolution in information technology can typically be characterized by a powerful synergy among emerging, converging and complementary technologies which are in step with user needs.
Currently Grid computing, Semantic Web and Workflow Systems embody this scenario. Islands of Grid infrastructure are now in place. Semantic interoperability standards are becoming ubiquitous in information brokerage systems. Explicit service descriptions with semantic content now support both workflow and grid navigation. Moreover, robust workflow pipelines are providing new avenues for a wide range of applications, notably knowledge discovery, remote device control, surveillance and command decision systems, e-manufacturing, business process execution, customer relations management and others.
A critical mass has emerged with eager early adopter communities, particularly from life sciences, biomedical informatics and manufacturing, recognizing the impact of globally interoperable workflow. One bottleneck was the problem of supplying sufficient computational power to support workflows: grid computing comes to the rescue. Unsurprisingly, the Grid community has now signalled that it is ready to embrace scientific workflows as the champion of the Grid infrastructure. Industry scouts looking for technologies that can leverage enhanced productivity and business process continuity are finding near-market commercial applications for Grid-based business process workflows. Meanwhile, rapid progress in the Semantic Web has led to the natural question - can we build Semantic Grids that can have some degree of reasoning and intelligence?
With an abundance of heterogeneous and yet interoperable middleware alternatives now available under the SOA model, there exist unmistakable opportunities to combine the best infrastructure combinations into a world wide workflow grid. It is time to reflect upon the missing pieces of this jigsaw puzzle. A coherent agenda for identifying the vital specifications of a truly world wide workflow system on the grid is imperative and timely.
Key Web visionaries, luminaries, thought leaders and scientific and engineering pioneers are invited to participate in World Wide Workflow Grid @GridAsia'07, Singapore, from June 5-7th 2007.

TRACK 1: Workflow and Grid Integration Systems: Killer Applications in the making
In view of the recent proliferation of workflow systems, workbenches, dashboards and web mashups, a survey of the characteristics of these systems and a comparative assessment of their grid computing interoperability is essential for the vision of creating a worldwide workflow grid resource. In this track, researchers and vendors of workflow integration systems are invited to showcase their technologies and explain how their services can be invoked, and how their workflows can be interconnected with those of other systems. Their capabilities and functionalities will be demonstrated against a rich variety of applications in specific domain areas to highlight the emerging areas of workflow systems and pipelines utilising the grid.

TRACK 2: Knowledge Discovery and the Semantic Web: Prelude to a World Wide WorkFlow Grid
Providing machine readable access to scientific information is a fundamental concern of all scientists. No single repository of knowledge or data processing service is sufficient on its own to provide the information required by scientists. Yet seamless semantic integration and interoperability of resources remain to formidable challenges for workflow, database integration and knowledge discovery, particularly in the life sciences. Crucial to these goals are the provision of unambiguous, semantically rich, structured declarations of scientific knowledge and metadata.
The Semantic Web envisions a new standardized information infrastructure that enables computers to facilitate the derivation of actionable knowledge from data and information. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) endorsed Semantic Web technologies address the key challenges of information management; namely identifying objects in the Web space with Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) and encoding knowledge in the form of standard machine-readable ontologies with the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Web Ontology Language (OWL). Distributed knowledge and data processing can be located in registries of Web Services and co-coordinated into integrated workflows. Provenance tracking of workflows provides rich historical metadata for workflow reuse. Coupled with ontological query languages, agent systems and Web services a migration from a syntactic Web of documents to a semantic Web of ontologies will emerge.
Ontologies facilitate database integration and support the creation of instantiated knowledgebases. These can in turn be mapped to other ontologies providing rich cross-domain knowledge representations suitable for Description logic (DL) based reasoning and inferencing. Query Pattern-based and Classification-based DL reasoning over large scale instantiated knowledgebases are becoming central to contemporary knowledge discovery, albeit computationally expensive, requiring high performance computing facilities such as GRID architecture.
Upon Semantic Web infrastructure, workflow technology and knowledge discovery will flourish. The goal of this special session aims to set the stage with a collection of representative topics illustrating key technologies crucial to realization of Semantic Web and their connection to Workflow Integration and Grid Computing. This triumvirate of the modern knowledge age will take another step towards a paradigmatic shift which we have seen with the advent of the World Wide Web.

Constructing and running large-scale software infrastructures
based on scientific workflows
Workflows, in one form or another, are today becoming a de facto standard for
composition of services in Service Oriented Architectures (SOA).
Their acceptance in industry has gone beyond isolated research groups
and moved into production facilities and domains which have, until
recently, been a sole abode of analytic systems such as SAS and Oracle.
As a consequence, many traditional software engineering problem
areas, such as tool integration and knowledge discovery, have been
made more manageable if not solved entirely.
However, as with any major shift in perspective, a whole new set
of challenges arose as well, and new methodologies are now
needed to address them.
This track will be concerned with how workflows affect
large-scale projects in industrial and academic communities
and how they help bridge the gap between the two.
Three levels of Workflow Impact on Large Scale Projects
We will be discussing how the workflows impact these projects on three levels.
Technical topics will include:
- Firstly, the development issues such as specification, application
structuring and design, recombination and reuse will be analyzed.
War stories from the participants will be used to reach conclusions
on best practices.
- Secondly, project management aspects such as lifecycle of workflow
projects, transfer of ownership between workflow authors, cross-team
communication and workflow support and maintenance will all be covered
in order to isolate common patterns.
- Finally, on the organization level, workflow-enabled benefits such
as accountability, reliability and traceability will be looked into
to see how they affect the operations on a wider scale. The organizers
will also showcase their experiences from the UK Discovery Net project
and its follow-up activities.
- Pros and cons of Grid and Web services, and the practical distinction between the two
- Feasibility of public services as opposed to proprietary in the business environment
- Building workflow-interchange communities (InforSense CustomerHub, MyExperiment...)
- Organizing and storing custom workflow components

P3. Workflow Standardization for Interoperability in Industry and Academia
Over the course of the past 5-6 years, a number of cutting edge workflow
technologies has been developed. However, history has shown that wider
acceptance depends not on the sharpness of the blade, but on the hardness
of steel. The panel will be looking into the numerous takes on workflow
tools, languages and interoperability and discuss what areas would
benefit from standardization. The role of standards will also be discussed
in the light of major software companies offering their proprietary
workflow solutions, and how standards can help academic communities
and specialized workflow companies preserve their current advantage
in the market.

Have you wondered why you are clicking on webpages, cut-and-pasting endlessly, day after day? Could you not relegate repetitive tasks to some automated system which you could re-use? Better still, could you not have some workflow system which you could re-use and re-purpose with a simple change of a database or a parameter or two? Can I have a simple way of calling all my grid resources? Have no fear, the 1st WWWFG Tutorials are here. Prior to the 1st WWWFG '07 meeting, we are organising a few tutorial sessions designed for us to learn the how-to's of workflow, semantic web and grid.
If you are interested to run a tutorial, please do let cbaker _at_ i2r.a-star.org.sg and tinwee _at_ bic.nus.edu.sg know. We have 50 Pentium III laptop computers with wireless Internet access, either Windows XP or Linux (Knoppix LiveCD or BioSlax LiveCD) platforms.
